I Followed the Moon to the River, My Far-Flung Home
我跟着月亮去到了河,我遥远的家
Video performance. February 2021
This work was made to celebrate the Lunar New Year and as a reminiscence of the life and culture in China felt by its overseas wanderers.
This video performance, choreographed and performed by Rourou Ye, uses movement and visual images to respond to the album 42 days by Southeast of Rain, a band consisting of two Chinese female contemporary musicians. Together, three artists recall the far-away sensations of "home" while drawing on their multicultural identities as Chinese artists living in the USA.

“The film is transportive, and I am in awe of having felt so geographically moved while confined in my own home. And even more in awe of Ye for having created this experience while confined in her own home. Working within the restrictions imposed by the COVID era, Ye inventively uses household items—a flashlight, a bedroom wall, old video recordings, rice, and a bathtub—to evoke images of Chinese culture and New York City life.”

42 DAYS BY THE SOUTHEAST OF THE RAIN
42 Days is a collection of electro-acoustic improvisations and compositions for pipa (a Chinese string instrument), voice, field recordings, and electronics created by The experimental duo Southeast of Rain. The album travels freely yet subtly between intimate acoustic improvisations, ambient atmosphere, and elaborate sonic explorations with epic arcs while paying homage to the affinity with nature found in traditional Chinese music. The duo composed, performed, recorded, mixed, and mastered all 8 original tracks on the album together: a culmination of their collaboration over 9 years, embracing their multifaceted identities as two female composers, sound artists, and producers who work fearlessly between the cracks of multiple worlds and disciplines.
